The Royal Canal Greenway celebrated its 1st birthday in March 2022. Since opening over 640,000 trips have been taken on the Royal Canal Greenway. The 130km stretch features 90 bridges, 33 locks, 17 harbours and four aqueducts and is the perfect way to explore Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands.
Greenway users can complete the entire 130km in one visit or explore in shorter excursions. The route is broken down into 14 connecting access points and towns ranging between 6km and 15km in length.
Here in Tarmonbarry, we are lucky to close by two trail heads. One in the village of Cloondara and the other in Longford town. Cloondara is home to Midlands Cycle Hub, making it easy to hire a bike and explore the Royal Canal Greenway. Of course, Longford is one of the biggest towns along the Royal Canal Greenway with restaurants, café’s and more to discover.
The joint initiative between Waterways Ireland and the local authorities in counties Kildare, Meath, Westmeath, and Longford links several large attractions across Ireland including the Corlea Trackway, Centre Parks Longford and Strokestown Park.
